In recent years, we have witnessed the evolution of donor recognition and stewardship to include increased focus on private recognition and donor engagement. This session will explore:

The forces that are driving this evolution and how it may affect your organization and your donors' expectations.
The fundamental concepts that are critical to effective donor relationship management.
The meaning of private recognition and how you can use it to create more meaningful interactions with your donors.
New and fun ideas and examples that you and your organization can draw on to refresh your approach to donor recognition and stewardship.

10:55 - 11:55 am

Breakout 1C: Redefining Recognition
Lindsay Gilbert

Tribute giving not only creates a meaningful legacy for donors, but can also achieve significant fund development goals. Through a collaborative process with fund development and launch of an innovative recognition program, we are now telling stories and sharing legacies about the honoree, while taking donor engagement to the next level. I would like to share with other Donor Relation Professionals the critical interactions and recognition systems we can all implement to see our donor engagement and tribute giving programs soar.

Breakout 1D: 10 Things Every Donor Relations Professional Needs to Know
Anne Manner-McLarty

Prior to the session, I will conduct a survey of recognized experts in the field to gather insights and advice. During the session, I will lead a discussion around a similar set of questions and my findings to date. This experience will contribute to the shared understanding of resources in the Toronto region and experiences and inform my scheduled August 2016 ADRP webinar on the same topic. Likely questions:

We'll take answers from the attendees and discuss findings from the survey
What are the 10 things every practitioner should know?
Given your current perspective, what's the most basic advice you would've given yourself on your first day in this field?
What is the most helpful advice you have received from a fellow donor relations or stewardship professional?
What resource do you still wish for in your career?

Breakout 2B: Higher Ed Unsession

If we want donors to give more, we must first give them more. Developing robust and meaningful relationships with donors naturally gives rise to increased donor retention and giving levels over time is what we do at The Storytelling Non-Profit. As fundraisers, it can be really easy to develop “asking tunnel vision.” But at the end of the day, we are asking other people to part with their hard-earned money. So we must treat them like people, not just a number in the database. By taking an empathic approach to donor relations and creating communications that donors want to hear/read/watch, you lay the foundation for fruitful philanthropic relationships with your donors. Donors want to hear about the impact their gift has had, not just what your non-profit does. By focusing on the impact, you’ll be able to connect with donors’ hearts and minds. It is our goal is to help fundraisers and non-profit organizations transition their approach to fundraising and donor relations to be one that focuses on inspiring donors.
