Leading from the Middle
Over the past year, serving as ADRP President, I’ve been thinking about what sustainable leadership really looks like. More often than not, it doesn’t sit at the front of the room. It lives in the middle, balancing vision with practicality, message with mission, and individual voices with collective direction. Leading from the middle requires listening as much as speaking, supporting as much as guiding.
In a volunteer-driven organization like ADRP, this kind of leadership is essential. So much of our strength comes from thoughtful collaboration with people who show up consistently, contribute generously, and keep us moving forward without seeking the spotlight. It is this quiet and steady leadership that sustains us.
For me, this past year has reinforced that thriving systems are rarely powered by one voice alone. They are shaped by many, working in alignment and with intention. Leadership is not defined by visibility. It is measured by the impact it makes.
As you read this issue of The Hub, I encourage you to reflect on where your steady leadership shows up to move ideas forward or strengthen the systems around you. Thank you for being part of ADRP.
With gratitude,
Marian Johnson
President, ADRP
