Member Spotlight: Sarah Dale

Name: Sarah Dale

Institution: Humane Society of Tampa Bay

Position: Donor Relations and Grants Coordinator

ADRP member for 1 year

How long have you worked in donor relations/stewardship and how did you get involved in this profession?

I have worked in this profession for four years. I previously did not have any donor relations experience, but did have customer service experience. I was a volunteer for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and when this position opened up, it seemed like a good fit.

Could you tell us something about the organization you work for?

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay was founded in 1912. We are one of Florida’s oldest non-profits!

What do you like most about being a member of ADRP?

I am enjoying the resources. Sometimes a “google search” doesn’t bring you the best results. It’s great to have free webinars at your fingertips.

What is your greatest donor relations/stewardship achievement?

I am most proud of my achievements this year. I have had a part in our capital campaign for our new shelter and have been able to secure numerous gifts and further develop relationships with our donors.

What is the most important professional goal you are currently pursuing, i.e., attaining a degree, preparing to give a presentation, launching an initiative at work or in your community, etc.?

I would like to grow my role into a managerial position. I would like more leadership experience and am working towards that.

How big a role does the use of social media play in your work?

We have found that social media is great at getting the word out regarding our programs and services. It also is a great platform for telling our story. It doesn’t, however, always equate to donors.

Is there a resource, i.e., book, blog, website, etc., that you would recommend to other ADRP members?

I have found valuable information in The Chronicle of Philanthropy. I’m working on finding more resources this year.

What is the best piece of professional advice you have ever received?

It’s not always about the timing of the ask, it’s more about who does the ask.

Are there any particular stories, insights, etc., from your experiences in donor relations and stewardship that you would like to share with our colleagues?

Always remember, the smallest financial donor could end up leaving a huge donation in their estate. Each donor is important!
