Truman Capote is quoted as saying, "to me, the greatest pleasure of writing is not what it's about, but the inner music the words make." I've always loved this quote. Words, voices, actions...these are powerful things, especially when joined together. I left our recent ADRP Conference in Las Vegas energized by the more than 600 voices who inspired my inner music and gave me great hope for the future of our profession.

I was particularly impressed by a list of characteristics brainstormed by those newest to our field when asked during a master class, "what makes us unique as donor relations and stewardship professionals?" The idea was to create a list of words that speak to our cores, that can help us celebrate what we do and pick us up on days where we struggle. We are collaborators, analytical yet compassionate, history keepers, problem solvers, translators, fire-fighters, story tellers and good listeners.

Imagine a donor relations and stewardship professionals refrain like this Power Scholars pledge the Y asks youth who participate in our summer enrichment program to recite at the start of each day. If you don't get pumped up after this video...send me an email and we'll talk. Find the words that spark your inner music and post them in your office or cube and find joy in the work that we do.

What would you add to the list of characteristics? Feel free to connect with me on Twitter or LinkedIn to continue this conversation. I think it's an important one to have as we continue to explore a common language for our profession. I am so honored and excited to serve as your president for the next year!

Thank you to the entire ADRP membership for your support of the Las Vegas community who so graciously hosted our annual conference just days before tragedy struck. We have appreciated the messages you sent to [email protected] letting us know that you arrived home safely. We hope you will take action in whatever way matters to you most to help our new friends heal after this event.

New Logo and Tagline for ADRP

Kathleen Diemer, Past President

If you have visited the ADRP website in the last two weeks, you may have noticed ADRP's new logo and tagline. Unveiled during the annual meeting at our recent conference, the new logo and tagline offer an updated identity for our profession and our association.

Why did ADRP need a new logo and tagline? The existing logo and tagline "Your Connection to Inspired Stewardship," were created in 2007.  In the last decade, both our profession and our association have seen tremendous growth and continuous change. ADRP will always inspire great stewardship, but our association and our vast network of professionals now represent much more in the field of philanthropy.

It has been a pleasure to work in this field for more than two decades and to witness the growing reliance on the work of donor relations professionals.  Our efforts, no longer seen as an after-thought, are now an integral part of the endless fundraising cycles at our organizations.

From Donor Relations to Major Gift Fundraising

Colton Withers, CFRE
Director of Development
Purdue Foundation

It's an old nonprofit adage that "we're all in the business of fundraising." Perhaps that is the case. But what is definitely true is that we're all in the business of donor relations. When a major gift officer sits down to make an ask, that's one moment in time. But donor/institution relationships don't happen in a vacuum. Donors bring to the metaphorical table, the same table donor relations professionals must have a seat at, their entire experience of being a donor to our institutions. It's all on the table right next to the proposal.

The recently released 2016 US Trust Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy, conducted in partnership with the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, gives donor relations and stewardship professionals insight into the top of the giving pyramid. Drawing from a nationally representative random sample of wealthy donors, the study explores philanthropic trends, strategies and behaviors among the high net worth population.

Here are three things I think donor relations and stewardship professionals need to pay attention to in 2017.

How long have you worked in donor relations/stewardship and how did you get involved in this profession?

I have worked in donor relations/stewardship for 9 years with the University of Alaska. I was introduced to the field when I worked as the Secretary Senior in the College of Human and Natural Resource Science Alumni & Friends Office at Washington State University. Everything about the job excited me, from sending out acknowledgements to donor events. So when Alaska called, I looked for work in the donor relations realm.
